Rear-end collisions involving horse-drawn buggies can be devastating, especially on rural roads where visibility and speed differences create dangerous conditions. A tragic crash in Randolph County, Missouri, left one man dead and two women injured after an SUV struck a buggy traveling along Route M.

What Happened on Route M

According to KTTN News, the crash occurred around 4:29 p.m. on March 22, 2026, on Route M, approximately three miles west of Middle Grove.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2021 Ford Escape, driven by a 75-year-old woman from Moberly, was traveling westbound when it struck the rear of a horse-drawn buggy traveling in the same direction.

The buggy was operated by a 26-year-old man from Madison, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Randolph County Deputy Coroner. A 20-year-old female passenger in the buggy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by Survival Flight to University Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the Ford Escape suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Moberly Regional Medical Center. Authorities reported that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Both the SUV and the buggy sustained total damage. Emergency responders from multiple agencies assisted at the scene as the investigation continues.

Can the SUV Driver Be Held Liable?

Under Missouri law, drivers are required to maintain a safe following distance and operate their vehicles with due care. Rear-end collisions often raise questions about whether the following driver was distracted, speeding, or failed to recognize slower-moving traffic ahead.

Horse-drawn buggies are lawful roadway users in Missouri. If investigators determine that the SUV driver failed to maintain a proper distance or did not react appropriately to traffic conditions, she may face civil liability for wrongful death and personal injury claims arising from the crash.

The Vulnerability of Buggy Occupants

Horse-drawn buggies provide little protection in collisions with motor vehicles. Without seat belts, airbags, or reinforced structures, occupants are exposed to the full force of impact. Rear-end crashes are especially dangerous, often causing the buggy to collapse or eject passengers onto the roadway.

For communities that rely on buggies for transportation, these risks are an everyday reality, particularly on roads shared with faster-moving vehicles.

Why These Cases Are Complex

Fatal buggy crashes often involve both wrongful death and personal injury claims, requiring a detailed investigation into driver behavior, roadway conditions, and vehicle positioning. Insurance issues may also arise when multiple victims are involved, and liability may be contested.

Establishing fault typically requires reviewing crash reports, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene to determine whether negligence played a role.

Understanding the Legal Options

Collisions involving horse-drawn carriages can raise difficult legal and emotional questions. The deceased driver’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim, while injured parties may have grounds to pursue personal injury lawsuits if a livestock owner’s negligence contributed to the accident. These claims help cover funeral and burial expenses, medical and rehabilitation costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.

Every case depends on its specific facts, and determining liability requires a careful legal review.
