Late-night crashes involving horse-drawn buggies can be devastating. A collision on April 12, 2026, in Limestone Township, Pennsylvania, left a woman with critical injuries after a vehicle struck the buggy from behind.
What Happened on Middle Road
According to state police, the crash occurred around 11:55 p.m. on Middle Road near Route 880.
Authorities report that a Subaru driven by Basir McGuffie, of Williamsport, collided with the rear of a horse-drawn buggy carrying Katie Beiler, 21, of Loganton, and Jonas Stoltzfus, 20, of Jersey Shore.
Beiler suffered critical injuries and remains in intensive care at Geisinger Medical Center. Stoltzfus was also injured and received treatment at UPMC Williamsport. The driver of the Subaru was not reported to be injured.
What Investigators Will Likely Examine
Rear-end crashes involving buggies often raise important questions about visibility and driver awareness, especially at night. Investigators will likely look at:
- Whether the buggy had proper lighting or reflective materials,
- The speed and attentiveness of the driver approaching from behind,
- Whether the driver maintained a safe following distance, and
- Road conditions and lighting along Middle Road.
These details can help clarify what happened in the moments before the impact.
Why Nighttime Buggy Crashes Are Especially Dangerous
Horse-drawn buggies are harder to detect in low-light conditions, even when they are properly equipped with lights or reflectors. Drivers traveling at typical roadway speeds may not recognize a slower-moving buggy in time to avoid a collision.
When a vehicle strikes a buggy from behind, the occupants have little protection from the force of impact, which can lead to severe injuries.
How Negligence May Shape This Case
In crashes like this, the focus often turns to whether the driver approaching the buggy exercised reasonable care.
Drivers have a responsibility to remain alert, adjust to roadway conditions, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. If a driver fails to do so, that may support a finding of negligence.
Whether negligence can be established ultimately depends on the specific facts of the case.
