According to Singletracks, the incident occurred on Thursday, February 26, 2026, while volunteers were performing trail work at Confluence Park in Delta, Colorado.
Dan Wegelin, a board member of the Delta Area Mountain Bikers (DAMB) and a local trail builder, was working on the trails when a cow escaped from a nearby sale yard and entered the area.
Witness accounts indicate that Wegelin noticed the animal at about the same time he saw a friend nearby with young children. He reportedly called out to warn them to move away, at which point the cow turned its attention toward him.
According to Wegelin, the cow appeared agitated and charged toward him, knocking him down a 10-foot embankment. The animal then reportedly fell down the hill as well, landing on top of him. The cow remained on top of him for a short time while attempting to stand before eventually rolling off, allowing Wegelin to crawl away and reach his truck.
Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, and he was later transferred to the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction due to the severity of his injuries.
Reports indicate Wegelin suffered a collapsed lung, pneumothorax, four vertebral fractures, crushed ribs, shoulder injuries, broken fingers, knee injuries, a broken clavicle, and numerous cuts and abrasions.
