Fosterburg, IL (January 16, 2025) –  A crash involving loose horses on southbound Interstate 255 sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries and resulted in the death of the animals, according to the Illinois State Police.

Accident Details: According to investigators, a Chevrolet Traverse collided with horses on the roadway. These horses had been hit in a previous crash. After the impact, the SUV veered off the highway, went down a ravine, and struck a ditch. The 69-year-old male driver and a 62-year-old female passenger were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Understanding how the animals entered the roadway will be critical in determining whether any parties may be liable for failure to secure the animals. The investigation will likely focus on:

  • Containment failures at nearby properties or transport vehicles;
  • Whether the animals escaped from a trailer or pasture;
  • The timing and visibility of the crash, including lighting and signage;
  • Any available surveillance or dashcam footage; and
  • Witness statements to help establish the sequence of events.

My thoughts are with the two individuals who were injured in the collision. I wish them a fast recovery.
