Potosi, WI (June 15, 2025) — Authorities say a teenage driver from Dubuque struck several cows that had wandered onto Highway 61 in Grant County on Saturday evening, triggering a multi-party investigation and resulting in two citations.
Incident Details: The crash occurred on Highway 61 near Tobins Lane. According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were first alerted to a “large amount” of cattle loose in the roadway. Before deputies arrived, an 18-year-old southbound driver hit multiple cows. The livestock belonged to Gerald Kerkenbush of Potosi, who was later cited for allowing livestock at large. Fortunately, no human injuries were reported.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators also determined that 53-year-old Jess Johnson of Viroqua had driven past several vehicles with hazard lights activated, had been using his high beams, and had passed unsafely. Authorities cited him for failure to dim headlights, unsafe passing, and driving at an unreasonable speed, which were found to have contributed to the incident.
Livestock owners are responsible for securing their animals to prevent roadway hazards. Pending the outcome of this investigation, the teen may have a personal injury claim for any damage to their vehicle or emotional distress.
