Collisions between motor vehicles and horse-drawn buggies can turn deadly in an instant, particularly when higher-speed traffic overtakes slower-moving buggies on rural roads. A crash on January 7, 2026, in Salisbury Township claimed the life of 65-year-old Mary Ruth Stoltzfus after a minivan struck the rear of her buggy.
What Happened on Strasburg Road?
Lancaster Online reported that according to the Lancaster County coroner and Pennsylvania State Police, a crash occurred on the 4000 block of Strasburg Road. Stoltzfus, of Paradise Township, was operating her horse and buggy when a minivan collided with the back of it.
The impact ejected Stoltzfus from the buggy. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy and has not yet finalized the official cause and manner of death.
Authorities charged the minivan driver, 33-year-old Danial Ranck Miller of Berks County, alleging he was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash. He was in Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $125,000 bail and scheduled for a preliminary hearing.
