Springville, UT (May 28, 2025) – Several vehicles, including a semi-truck, were involved in a crash early Tuesday morning after loose cows wandered onto Interstate 15 in Utah County, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Accident Details: The incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. near milepost 259 on southbound I-15, close to the 400 South exit in Springville. Officials say approximately four to five cows made their way onto the freeway in the pre-dawn darkness. At least two right lanes were shut down during the morning commute as crews responded to a pileup involving five vehicles.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden confirmed that several cows were struck and that two to three of the animals were directly involved in the crash. Drivers described the scene as chaotic, with traffic backing up quickly due to the unexpected livestock hazard.

Legal Considerations: In crashes caused by loose livestock, questions often arise about liability. Property owners or livestock handlers may be held responsible if they failed to secure their animals properly. Victims in these cases could potentially file claims for vehicle damage and medical costs if negligence contributed to the crash.

Although injuries in this case were reported as minor, multi-vehicle crashes involving large animals can carry high risks. Authorities will likely investigate how the cows escaped and whether fencing or containment requirements were violated.

Ongoing Investigation: The Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the incident. Crews worked for several hours to clear the scene and ensure no additional animals remained on the roadway.

I hope those injured recover quickly and that steps are taken to prevent similar incidents on this stretch of highway.
