Fountain Township, MN (June 1, 2025) — A semi-truck driver suffered injuries and ten cows were killed early Saturday morning in a crash on Highway 16 in Fillmore County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Incident Details: The collision occurred just before 4:30 a.m. as a 52-year-old man was driving westbound on Highway 16. According to authorities, the truck struck 11 cows on the roadway. Ten cows died at the scene, and one was seriously injured. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Minnesota State Patrol has not yet determined how or why the animals came to be on the road. An investigation is underway to establish whether fencing failed, if the cattle escaped from a nearby property, or if any parties may have been negligent in their duty to contain the livestock.
While relatively rare, livestock-versus-vehicle collisions can have catastrophic consequences. Livestock owners are generally responsible for ensuring their animals are secured. If cattle are improperly contained, owners could face liability for property damage, injury to the truck driver, and economic losses related to crashes.
For the injured driver, a personal injury claim may be possible to recover damages related to medical treatment, vehicle repair or replacement, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
