Pettis County, MO (May 26, 2025) — A 48-year-old woman from Sweet Springs sustained minor injuries Monday night after her vehicle struck a cow standing on a rural road in Pettis County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash remains under investigation.
Incident Details: The collision occurred around 9:50 p.m. as the woman drove south on Route T near Malta Bend. Authorities say her 2007 Nissan Murano struck a cow in the roadway, causing the vehicle to veer off the right side and come to rest partially in a ditch. The woman, wearing a seatbelt, declined medical treatment at the scene. Her vehicle sustained moderate damage and was towed.
The condition of the cow was not included in the crash report.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Missouri State Highway Patrol has not released details on how the animal entered the roadway. Investigators may evaluate whether fencing was breached or livestock containment protocols were violated.
Livestock owners in Missouri have a legal duty to keep animals properly secured.
Pending the investigation’s findings, the injured driver may have grounds for a personal injury claim to cover property damage, medical costs, or other related expenses, even if initial injuries appear minor.
